1. ‘Fight Song’ by Rachel Platten

I’d describe “Fight Song” as my “fighting depression” theme song. This song came out in 2014, which was around the same time I was diagnosed with depression.

The lyrics, “This is my fight song, take back my life song,” spoke to me so deeply and gave me motivation to keep fighting!

2. ‘Fearless’ by Taylor Swift

I’m a big Taylor Swift fan and grew up listening to her music. Her song “Fearless” is one I can always scream in my car.

The word “fearless” gives me the motivation to be brave in my fight against depression.

3. ‘Umbrella’ by Rihanna feat. Jay-Z

Umbrella” always pumps me up — especially when I need a boost to get moving or head to the gym. I used to dance to this song in the game Just Dance, and it helps me remember the good parts of my childhood.

4. ‘bad guy’ by Billie Eilish

I love ”bad guy” by Billie Eilish. I love all the instrumentals and beats in the song, which help me get moving. I’ve always loved listening to Eilish’s songs since I know she’s also opened up about her own history of depression.

Hearing others open up about their depression has been helpful for me in opening up to others about mine.

5. ‘Where It All Begins’ by Hunter Hayes feat. Lady A

Where It All Begins” is a special song to me, and when I’m struggling with my depression, it’s always a song I’ll listen to.

The first line of the lyrics goes, “Well, I didn’t know me, like I know me now, sometimes, you gotta get lost so you can get found.” Part of this line was my first-ever tattoo, as it spoke to me in my journey with my mental health and depression.

6. ‘Watermelon Sugar’ by Harry Styles

Watermelon Sugar” reminds me of summer! Songs that remind me of the beach, summer, and the sun just give me the boost of energy I need. The summer is something I crave since I also suffer from seasonal affective disorder.

7. ‘Set Fire to the Rain’ by Adele

I always love singing along to an Adele song. Listening to Adele reminds me of all the times my friends and I would sing her songs in my car growing up. The nostalgia that ”Set Fire to the Rain” brings gives me this fight and drive and helps motivate me!

Adele is another artist who’s opened up about her struggles with depression.

8. ‘Who You Are’ by Jessie J

Who You Are” has always been helpful to me on days that are hard. The lyrics are a constant reminder that it’s OK to struggle, everybody does, and that there’s “nothing wrong with who you are.”

9. ‘Crazy in Love’ by Beyoncé feat. Jay-Z

Crazy in Love” just gets me in a dancing mood. When I’m down, having an upbeat song to dance to is super helpful in battling my depression.

Even when I’m not in the mood to dance, this song helps me get the motivation to get moving somehow.

10. ‘Belong Together’ by Mark Ambor

Belong Together” is a pretty new one I’ve come across, as it was released in 2024. I’ve found myself wanting to listen to this in my car with the windows down.

It’s a lovely, upbeat song, and the lyrics remind me that there’s so much around me to be grateful for.

The takeaway

Music has always had a way of impacting how I feel. It brings me joy that songs like these exist and can help me when my depression is taking over.
